According to early researches, the test subjects, rats, showed significant weight loss without any side effects.

Subsequent clinical study with Caralluma Fimbriata to prove that it is safe for human consumption as a weight loss supplement consisted of 50 overweight test subjects with BMIs over 26. One half of the total subjects were given the active compound, while the other half received a placebo. The experiment was a double blind randomized test, wherein the diets of the subjects were not changed. However, all the subjects were advised to walk for 30 minutes in the day. After a period of 8 weeks, there were no reports of increased toxicity from the extract, and compared to the placebo group, the individuals who received the extract showed significant appetite and waist circumference reduction. On the other hand, the subjects receiving the extract showed no major difference in body weight, body mass index, hip circumference, and body fat or energy intake, when compared against the placebo group.

Another trial of Caralluma was conducted in California and was a 4 week, randomized, placebo controlled trial. The trial consisted of 26 overweight patients (of which 15 were women and 9 were men, with ages between 31 and 73). The study that was conducted at the Western Geriatric Research Institute entailed 19 subjects being given the active compound and the balance seven being given the placebo medication.

The extract was administered through gelatin capsules at a dosage of one 500 mg capsule around 30 minutes before every meal. Furthermore, the test subjects were asked to stick to their existing exercise patterns and food intake, and to not modify their diets during the 4 weeks of the treatment period. However, neither of these two details was available in the publication for this report. Notably, one male from both the experiments and the control group, failed to appear for final assessment and the reasons for their absence were not listed in the publication. In terms of adverse effects, one person from the placebo group (3 males and 3 females), and one person from the experiment group reported of bloating and acidity soon after beginning the treatment. The same subjects also reported that the problems began again as soon as they restarted the medication after stopping.

Consequently, both these subjects discontinued the intake of their capsules. As per the final trial summary, over 80 percent of the final treatment group (5 men and 13 women) reported weight loss with 11 subjects reporting weight loss of around 6 pounds. The remaining 7 subjects reported loss of around 1 to 2 pounds (n=4), or sustained their starting weight (n=2). The exceptions from the experiment group were a couple of women who lost 8 pounds and 9 pounds, and one who deviated from her calorie intake and gained 17 pounds. From the placebo group, three subjects (n=6) reported a gain of one pound while one subject lost one pound. To summarize, over 60% of the people who took the extract treatment lost a minimum of 6 pounds in less than one month.

Therefore, the results of this study more than prove the fact that Caralluma Fimbriata is an effective natural weight supplement for weight loss. In addition to its positive effects, the study also verified the results of the earlier test, i.e. the safety of using Caralluma Fimbriata, by the absence of any serious adverse events, with respect to the test subjects.

Similarly, a study was conducted to prove that LD50 does not show concern or increased toxicity levels. As per the results, the LD50 levels were more than 5g per Kg.

As a conclusion, two independent studies consisting of a total of 44 people using the Caralluma Fimbriata extract did not result in any adverse incidents or side effects.
